Bed Bugs: how they live, why they invade & how to get rid of them
Bed bugs are hitchhikers - they don't come from being dirty, they come home with you. A rental, a hotel, a visitor, or secondhand furniture is all it takes, which makes vacation-heavy lake homes and guest rooms a real risk. They're one of the hardest pests to beat with DIY.
How bed bugs live
Bed bugs hide within a few feet of where people sleep - mattress seams, box springs, headboards, baseboards, and outlet covers - and come out at night to feed. They're flat enough to tuck into tiny cracks, can go weeks without a meal, and their eggs resist many products, which is why infestations rebound after a half-measure treatment.
Why they come into your home
They travel in on luggage, bags, clothing, used furniture, and guests. Once inside they spread room to room. Nothing about a clean or messy home invites them - it's purely about being carried in, then finding a place to hide near a sleeping host.
Signs of a bed bugs problem
- Small, itchy bites in lines or clusters, often on arms and legs
- Tiny dark spots (droppings) on sheets, seams, and mattress edges
- Shed skins or pale eggs in mattress and box-spring seams
- A sweet, musty odor in heavy infestations
How to get rid of bed bugs
Bed bugs are the pest where DIY most often fails and makes it worse by scattering them. Effective control is a thorough, room-by-room professional treatment - targeting all harborage, treating for eggs, and following up to catch what hatches. Early detection makes it far easier, so call at the first signs rather than waiting.
How to keep them out
- Inspect hotel and rental beds; keep luggage off the floor and bed
- Check secondhand furniture carefully before bringing it in
- Wash and hot-dry travel clothes when you get home
- Use mattress and box-spring encasements
- Reduce clutter around beds so hiding spots are limited
