Household Ants: how they live, why they invade & how to get rid of them

The little ants marching across the counter or bath are usually odorous house ants, pavement ants, or similar species. They're not destructive like carpenter ants, but they contaminate food, they're relentless, and squashing the trail never solves it - because the colony is somewhere you can't see.

How ants live

These ants live in large colonies - often with multiple queens - in soil, under slabs, in wall voids, and behind cabinets. Scouts lay a scent trail to food and water, and the rest follow. Odorous house ants smell faintly like rotten coconut when crushed. Colonies can split and spread when stressed by the wrong spray.

Why they come into your home

They come inside for food and water, especially anything sweet or greasy, and after heavy rain or drought pushes them from the yard. Crumbs, spills, pet food, sticky jars, and moisture around sinks keep them coming.

Signs of a ants problem

  • Trails of small ants to food, water, or trash
  • Ants around sinks, dishwashers, and pet bowls
  • A faint coconut-like smell when ants are crushed
  • More activity after heavy rain or dry spells

How to get rid of ants

Repellent sprays often make it worse by causing the colony to split and scatter. The fix is baiting that foragers carry back to the queens, paired with sanitation and sealing entry points. Correct identification matters - different ants need different baits - which is where a pro saves you weeks of frustration.

How to keep them out

  • Wipe up crumbs and spills; store food sealed
  • Keep sinks dry and fix drips
  • Take out trash and rinse recyclables
  • Seal gaps at baseboards, pipes, and windows
  • Keep pet food sealed and bowls clean
