Silverfish: how they live, why they invade & how to get rid of them

Silverfish are the shimmery, fast little insects you find in a bathroom sink, a basement box, or an old book. They're harmless to people but they feed on paper, glue, and fabric - so they can quietly ruin photos, documents, and stored linens in a damp lake house.

How silverfish live

Silverfish love humidity and dark, undisturbed spots - basements, bathrooms, crawlspaces, closets, and storage boxes. They eat starches: paper, book bindings, wallpaper paste, cardboard, and natural fibers. They're slow to mature but long-lived, and populations build in consistently damp areas.

Why they come into your home

Moisture is the magnet. Humid basements and crawlspaces, condensation, and cardboard storage give them everything they need. Lake homes that sit closed and damp between visits are especially prone.

Signs of a silverfish problem

  • Silvery insects in sinks, tubs, or basements
  • Yellow stains, tiny holes, or grazing marks on paper and fabric
  • Shed skins or pepper-like droppings in storage
  • Damage to stored books, photos, and boxes

How to get rid of silverfish

The lasting fix is drying things out - dehumidifying basements and crawlspaces and swapping cardboard for sealed totes - paired with targeted treatment and monitoring of the cracks and voids where they hide. Moisture control is what keeps them from coming back.

How to keep them out

  • Dehumidify basements, crawlspaces, and closets
  • Store paper and fabric in sealed plastic totes
  • Fix leaks and improve ventilation
  • Seal cracks and gaps in damp rooms
  • Declutter dark storage areas
