Flies & Gnats: how they live, why they invade & how to get rid of them

"Flies" covers a few very different problems: house flies coming in the door, fruit flies over the fruit bowl, drain flies from the sink, and fungus gnats from overwatered houseplants. The key is that each breeds in a specific spot - and once you find and clean the source, the swarm disappears.

How flies & gnats live

House flies breed in garbage, pet waste, and decaying matter and only need days to multiply. Fruit flies breed in overripe produce and sugary residue. Drain flies breed in the gunk lining slow drains. Fungus gnats breed in soggy potting soil. Chasing the adults never works - the breeding site is the fix.

Why they come into your home

Food, moisture, and organic buildup drive them: uncovered trash, ripe fruit, dirty drains, overwatered plants, and pet waste in the yard. Warm weather and any lingering damp organic material are all they need.

Signs of a flies & gnats problem

  • House flies clustering at windows and doors
  • Fruit flies hovering over produce and recycling
  • Small moth-like drain flies near sinks and tubs
  • Tiny gnats rising from houseplant soil when watered

How to get rid of flies & gnats

The fix is finding and eliminating the breeding source - cleaning drains, tossing ripe produce, sealing trash, letting plant soil dry - combined with treatment and exclusion for house-fly pressure from outside. We identify which fly it is and target where it's actually breeding, not just the swarm you see.

How to keep them out

  • Keep trash sealed and take it out regularly
  • Store and toss ripe produce; wipe up sugary spills
  • Clean and treat slow drains
  • Let houseplant soil dry between waterings
  • Add screens and door sweeps; clean up pet waste
