Squirrels & Nuisance Wildlife: how they live, why they invade & how to get rid of them
Wooded Lake lots come with wildlife, and some of it moves in - squirrels in the attic, raccoons in the chimney, opossums and skunks under the deck. Beyond the noise and mess, they gnaw wiring (a fire risk), tear insulation, and bring fleas and parasites with them.
How nuisance wildlife live
Squirrels nest in attics and soffits, chewing entry holes and wiring. Raccoons are strong and clever, tearing into attics and chimneys to den, especially with young in spring. Opossums and skunks shelter under decks, sheds, and porches. Most are looking for a warm, safe, dry place to nest near food.
Why they come into your home
Overhanging tree limbs, unscreened vents and chimneys, gaps at the roofline, and open spaces under decks give them the access and shelter they want - and pet food, trash, and gardens supply the food that keeps them around.
Signs of a nuisance wildlife problem
- Scratching, scurrying, or thumping in the attic or walls
- Chewed entry holes at the roofline, soffits, or vents
- Torn insulation, droppings, or a nesting smell
- Animals seen entering under a deck, shed, or porch
How to get rid of nuisance wildlife
Wildlife work is about safe removal and permanent exclusion, done right and legally - never just plugging a hole with young trapped inside. We identify the animal and entry points, remove them humanely, seal and reinforce the openings, and address the fleas or mess they leave behind so it doesn't happen again.
How to keep them out
- Trim tree limbs back from the roof
- Screen or cap chimneys, vents, and roof gaps
- Close off open spaces under decks, sheds, and porches
- Secure trash and don't leave pet food out
- Address any existing entry points before nesting season
