Cockroaches: how they live, why they invade & how to get rid of them

Roaches are a health pest first. They travel through drains and garbage and carry bacteria onto counters and dishes, and their droppings and shed skins are a known asthma trigger. They also breed fast - which is why a couple of sightings can become an infestation in weeks.

How cockroaches live

German cockroaches, the most common indoor kind, stay near warmth, food, and moisture - kitchens and bathrooms - and hide in cracks by day. A single egg case holds dozens of eggs, so populations climb quickly. The larger American roaches favor sewers, drains, basements, and crawlspaces and wander up from there.

Why they come into your home

Food residue, grease, moisture, and cardboard bring them in and keep them. They hitchhike indoors in grocery bags, boxes, appliances, and secondhand items, then settle around dishwashers, sinks, refrigerator motors, and floor drains.

Signs of a cockroaches problem

  • Roaches seen at night when a light flips on
  • Pepper-like droppings or dark smear marks in cabinets and drawers
  • A musty, oily odor in heavy infestations
  • Egg cases (small brown capsules) in cracks and behind appliances

How to get rid of cockroaches

Sanitation plus targeted baiting is what actually works - gel baits placed where roaches harbor, insect growth regulators to stop breeding, and sealing the cracks they live in. Sprays alone scatter them and rarely reach the source. Ongoing service matters because eggs are protected from most treatments and hatch after the fact.

How to keep them out

  • Clean up grease and crumbs; don't leave dishes or pet food out overnight
  • Fix drips and dry out sinks, tubs, and drains
  • Seal cracks around cabinets, pipes, and baseboards
  • Take out trash regularly and use sealed bins
  • Inspect grocery bags, boxes, and secondhand items before bringing them in
