How to keep spiders off your boat & dock

You can knock the webs down every single morning, or you can stop them from forming. Here’s what actually keeps spiders off your boat and dock at the Lake - starting with the one thing most people never fix.

Fix the food source first, not just the spiders

This is the whole game. Spiders don’t want your dock - they want the mosquitoes, midges, gnats, and mayflies swarming it. Your dock lights pull those insects in by the thousand after dark, and the spiders simply follow the buffet. Kill or reduce the insects and the spiders lose their reason to be there. Every other tip below matters less than this one.

Deal with the dock lights

Bright white lights are an insect magnet. Switch to warm/yellow “bug” LEDs, put lights on a timer or motion sensor so they’re not burning all night, and aim them where you need footing rather than blasting out over the water. You don’t have to sit in the dark - you just have to stop running a nightly all-you-can-eat bug buffet.

Cut the harborage

Give spiders fewer places to anchor and hide. Trim back vegetation and overhanging branches near the water, clear brush, logs, and clutter off the shoreline, and knock down webs and egg sacs as they appear so populations don’t compound. A periodic sweep or gentle pressure-wash of the dock boards, lift, and boat house pulls out the webs and sacs tucked into the cracks.

The DIY sprays - and their limits

Peppermint or citrus oil in water, diluted vinegar, dish-soap sprays, and tucked-away dryer sheets all get passed around the Lake, and they do have some short-term repellent effect. Be honest about what they are, though: they wash off in the first rain or wave spray, they break down fast in sun, and none of them touch the insects drawing the spiders in. They’re fine for a quick knock-down before company - not a season-long fix. And skip anything harsh near the water; a lot of common insecticides are unsafe for fish and aquatic life.

What actually holds all summer

The only thing that reliably keeps a Lake dock clear is treating the structure on a schedule through the season, with products chosen for the waterfront, applied where spiders travel and harbor. Do the DIY steps above and you’ll help; put a recurring dock program on top and the webs simply never get established. Timing matters too - see dock spider season for when to start.
