Mice & Rats: how they live, why they invade & how to get rid of them

At the Lake, rodents are a fall story: as nights cool, mice and rats move indoors for warmth, food, and nesting - and lake houses that sit empty between visits are easy targets. Beyond the ick factor, they gnaw wiring (a real fire risk) and contaminate food and surfaces.

How rodents live

A house mouse needs only a dime-sized gap to get in and can produce a new litter every few weeks, so a couple of mice become many by winter. They nest in wall voids, attics, and stored items, running the same routes each night along walls. Rats are larger, warier, and favor basements, crawlspaces, and areas near water.

Why they come into your home

Cooling weather, food, and shelter pull them inside: gaps around pipes and utility lines, garage doors, foundation cracks, pet food, bird seed, and clutter all help. A lake home closed up for weeks is quiet, undisturbed, and inviting - exactly what they look for.

Signs of a rodents problem

  • Droppings along walls, in drawers, or under sinks
  • Gnaw marks on food packaging, wood, or wiring
  • Scratching or scurrying in walls and ceilings at night
  • Greasy rub marks along baseboards and shredded nesting material

How to get rid of rodents

Trapping and baiting reduce the population, but the fix is exclusion - finding and sealing every entry point so more can't follow. We combine strategic trapping, tamper-resistant bait stations where appropriate, sealing gaps with rodent-proof materials, and fall proofing for homes that sit empty. Poison alone without sealing just invites the next wave.

How to keep them out

  • Seal gaps around pipes, vents, and the garage door (ΒΌ inch is enough)
  • Store food and pet food in sealed containers
  • Keep firewood and clutter away from the house
  • Proof the lake house before you close it up for the season
  • Trim vegetation back from the foundation
