Pantry & Stored-Food Pests: how they live, why they invade & how to get rid of them
Pantry pests - Indian meal moths, weevils, and small beetles - get into flour, cereal, rice, pet food, birdseed, and spices, then spread from package to package. They usually come home already inside a bag from the store, and by the time you see moths flying in the kitchen, several packages are affected.
How pantry pests live
The damage is done by larvae feeding inside stored food; the adults you see (small moths or beetles) are just the breeding stage looking for the next package. They chew into paper and thin plastic, so one infested bag becomes many. Warmth speeds the cycle, and forgotten packages keep it going.
Why they come into your home
They arrive in the groceries - infested at the source - and thrive on open or poorly sealed dry goods. Old, forgotten packages at the back of the pantry, plus pet food and birdseed in the garage, are common reservoirs.
Signs of a pantry pests problem
- Small moths flying in the kitchen at night
- Webbing, clumping, or tiny beetles in dry goods
- Larvae or holes in flour, cereal, rice, or pet food
- Problems spreading from package to package
How to get rid of pantry pests
Success means finding and tossing every infested package (check pet food and birdseed too), deep-cleaning shelves and cracks where larvae wander, and moving remaining goods into sealed containers - plus a targeted treatment of the pantry cracks and follow-up to catch stragglers. Missing one source restarts it.
How to keep them out
- Store dry goods, pet food, and birdseed in sealed containers
- Use older packages first and check dates
- Wipe shelves and clean spilled flour and crumbs
- Inspect bulk and grain products before storing
- Freeze susceptible items a few days after buying
